How Reverse Conception Date Calculation Works
When estimating when pregnancy occurred, obstetrical formulas reverse-calculate from established physiological milestones:
- Due Date Back-Calculation (Naegele's Inverse): By subtracting 266 days (38 weeks) from a validated 40-week Estimated Due Date, clinicians establish the biological fertilization date.
- Ultrasound Crown-Rump Length (CRL): In the first trimester (8 to 13 weeks), fetal CRL measurements provide an accuracy margin of ±3 to 5 days, making sonographic dating the clinical gold standard (ACOG Practice Bulletin No. 700).
- The Sperm Longevity Window: Conception date identifies when the ovum was fertilized. However, intercourse that led to pregnancy may have occurred up to 120 hours prior. To visualize future cycles, plan intercourse on our free ovulation tracker.
